What is teeth grinding?

Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, is a condition where you clench your teeth tightly or move them back and forth. About 20% of the population suffers from this, both during the day and at night. Teeth grinding is caused by factors such as stress, sleep disorders, medication, smoking, or alcohol use. Everyone's situation is different, but one thing is certain: over time, the condition can lead to negative consequences. You can damage your teeth, have poor sleep, or even keep your partner awake. Additionally, many people experience pain in the jaw and head.

How does a treatment for teeth grinding work?

We treat teeth grinding with muscle relaxants. As the name suggests, this medication relaxes the muscles responsible for grinding. Your treatment starts with a consultation where you discuss your complaints and desires with your practitioner. They will explain exactly how the treatment works. The skin is disinfected and marked.

Then, the practitioner injects muscle relaxants into the large chewing muscle with a fine needle. This reduces the activity of the muscle, decreasing tension. This can reduce or even eliminate teeth grinding. A treatment for teeth grinding takes an average of 15 minutes.

Before undergoing a treatment for teeth grinding, you will have a short consultation. Here you discuss your complaints and desires. You can ask all your questions, and the treatment will be explained from A to Z. A consultation at Faceland is always free and without obligation, so you are not committed to anything.

First, the treatment area is thoroughly cleaned. Then, your practitioner places a few dots on the spots where they will inject. Muscle relaxants are injected into the chewing muscle with a fine needle. This reduces the activity of the muscle, which decreases teeth grinding and clenching.

The recovery from a muscle relaxant treatment is short, but there are a few things to consider. Wait at least 48 hours before exercising, and avoid saunas or tanning beds for the first 2 weeks. Also, be cautious in bright sunlight, as UV radiation can negatively affect the results.

Results of the teeth grinding treatment

After the treatment, you will experience much less tension in the chewing muscles, reducing teeth grinding and clenching. This can also lead to fewer jaw complaints, headaches, and sleep problems. Because the chewing muscle weakens, it can also become smaller, resulting in a narrower jawline for some people.

The muscle relaxants remain effective for about three months. Note that the results are optimal after two weeks. Immediately after the treatment, you probably won’t notice any difference. The muscle relaxants need time to take effect. If you are not satisfied, you can come in for a follow-up appointment within two to four weeks after your treatment.

Aftercare for teeth grinding treatment

After the treatment, you can move the treated area normally, but do not massage or rub it. You may experience bruising or swelling, which will go away on its own. Once the injection sites are closed, you can wear makeup on the treated area, usually after a few hours.

Additionally, avoid exercising and visits to the sauna or tanning bed for 24 hours after the treatment. UV exposure can make the treated skin extra sensitive and negatively affect the results. Excessive sweating can also reduce the effectiveness of the muscle relaxants.

Frequently Asked Questions about Teeth Grinding

There is no clear cause for teeth grinding as it varies for everyone. For most people, it is related to stress, anxiety, tension, or sleep problems. Smoking, alcohol, or drug use can also exacerbate grinding.

You can try to avoid the triggers of teeth grinding, but often you have little control over them. Special mouthguards can help, but they only prevent the upper and lower jaws from touching each other, not the tension. A treatment with muscle relaxants removes this tension.

To reduce teeth grinding, our practitioners inject muscle relaxants into the large chewing muscle on both sides of the face.

High tension in the jaws is one of the main symptoms of teeth grinding. Additionally, you may experience headaches, jaw pain, and sleep problems.

During teeth grinding, you firmly slide your teeth over each other. It differs from teeth clenching, where you simply clench your teeth together. Both are caused by tension in the jaw muscle, which can be reduced with muscle relaxants.
