What is a Prosthesis Replacement?

A prosthesis replacement is a surgical procedure where old breast implants are replaced with new ones. This often occurs when patients wish for a larger size. It’s natural to change your mind, even with breast implants. Additionally, many women opt for this surgery because they’ve had their implants for a while. We advise replacing them after ten years with a prosthesis replacement. Discuss your reasons with your consultant and plastic surgeon.

How Does a Prosthesis Replacement Work?

Before the replacement, you’ll first consult with a specialist to discuss your desires and reasons for the surgery. If you’re certain, a surgery date is set. You’ll also have a meeting with the plastic surgeon to finalize the treatment plan. The surgery takes place at an external facility, and you’ll be under anesthesia to ensure you don’t feel anything during the procedure.

The surgeon makes an incision in the breast fold, removes the old implants, and inserts the new ones. Once they are in the correct position, the incision is closed with dissolvable stitches and covered with bandages. You’ll wear a postoperative bra and be taken to the recovery room. After a final check-up, you can go home the same day. If you’re just having the implants removed without replacements, the process remains the same but without new prostheses.

Before undergoing a prosthesis replacement, you’ll consult with a specialist to discuss your goals and health, ensuring you’re a good candidate for the procedure. Bring a medication list and details about your current implants, which you can request from the clinic that performed your original augmentation. If everything looks good, you’ll schedule a surgery date and meet with the plastic surgeon.

Performed under general anesthesia, the surgeon will remove the old implants through incisions in the breast folds and replace them with new ones. Once placed, the incisions are closed, and you’re fitted with a postoperative bra. After recovery, you’ll be discharged the same day.

After six weeks, you can resume normal activities. However, physical exertion, sports, and heavy lifting should be avoided for four to six weeks. Wait at least two weeks before driving or bending. You’ll receive detailed aftercare instructions following your procedure.

Results of a Prosthesis Replacement

The results depend on the goals you discussed during your consultation. Some choose larger implants, while others keep the same size, or you may opt for complete removal. The ultimate goal is to ensure you feel confident and comfortable in your body.

Initially, your breasts will be hidden under bandages and a postoperative bra. Once removed, you’ll begin to see the results within three months, though it can take up to a year for the scars to fully heal. During this time, Faceland is always available for questions or concerns.

Aftercare for Prosthesis Replacement

For six weeks after surgery, wear your postoperative bra day and night to support the breasts during healing. Avoid sports and heavy lifting for four to six weeks to prevent pressure on the chest. You may resume driving after two weeks, and your stitches will dissolve on their own.

It’s essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Stop smoking two weeks before surgery and avoid it for at least four weeks post-surgery. Results will start to appear after three months, but your scars may still be sensitive—protect them from the sun. Detailed aftercare instructions will be provided to ensure optimal recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

A prosthesis replacement is a surgical procedure where old breast implants are removed and replaced with new ones. It’s typically done for those wanting a different size or who’ve had their implants for an extended period.

It’s common for women to opt for a prosthesis replacement if they want a larger size or if their implants have been in place for around ten years, at which point we recommend replacing them.

This procedure is ideal for women seeking a larger size after their initial augmentation or for those wanting to remove their implants altogether. Replacing implants after ten years is also recommended for health reasons.

Recovery usually takes about six weeks, though this can vary. If you’ve opted for larger implants, there may be more discomfort as the skin adjusts. After three months, most of the swelling will subside, and the results will become clearer. It can take up to a year for the scars to fully heal.

The cost depends on the type of implants used. The consultation is always free, and the price list provides an indication of costs for your procedure.

The surgery itself is performed under anesthesia, so you won’t feel anything. Post-surgery, discomfort is common, especially if you’ve opted for larger implants, as the skin needs to stretch. Pain may also occur around the incision sites, but painkillers will be provided to manage this.
